What is SHARE

SHARE is a national initiative aimed at developing a trusted data space for cancer research that enables healthcare organizations to securely collaborate and share clinical data.

The project focuses on lung cancer and integrates data from hospitals participating in the Spanish Lung Cancer Group (GECP) network. By connecting these data sources through a federated infrastructure, SHARE enables large-scale data analysis without requiring institutions to transfer ownership or control of their data.

The initiative combines medical expertise, advanced data infrastructure, and artificial intelligence technologies to create an ecosystem that supports research, innovation, and improved patient outcomes.

The Challenge

Healthcare systems generate vast amounts of valuable data, but much of this information remains isolated in different hospitals and databases.

This fragmentation limits the ability of researchers to:

  • Access comprehensive clinical datasets
  • Conduct large-scale studies
  • Develop reliable predictive models
  • Identify patterns in disease progression

In oncology research, these limitations can slow the development of new treatments and reduce opportunities for collaboration.

At the same time, strict privacy regulations such as GDPR require strong safeguards when handling sensitive health data.

SHARE addresses these challenges by creating a secure and governed data-sharing environment that allows institutions to collaborate without compromising privacy or control over their data.

Project Objectives

The SHARE project aims to achieve the following objectives:

Create a National Cancer Data Space

Develop a secure infrastructure that enables hospitals and research institutions to share and analyze clinical data.

Enable Secure Data Collaboration

Allow institutions to collaborate while maintaining control over their data through federated technologies.

Support Artificial Intelligence Development

Use aggregated datasets to train advanced AI models capable of improving diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment strategies.

Advance Precision Medicine

Generate insights that support personalized treatment and better clinical decision-making.

Strengthen the Data Ecosystem in Healthcare

Promote interoperability and collaboration across institutions and research networks.

Expected Outcomes

The project will deliver:

  • A federated infrastructure for clinical data sharing
  • AI models for lung cancer prognosis and survival prediction
  • Improved collaboration between hospitals and researchers
  • A framework for secure and ethical data governance
  • A foundation for future health data spaces in Spain and Europe
